【Meaning】
The original meaning of Ran (冉) refers to fine, soft hair hanging down in a delicate manner. Its meaning is also interchangeable with 髯 (Rán), which specifically refers to the whiskers or beard on a person's cheeks. Symbolically, it suggests something supple, growing, or flowing.
【Origins】
From the Gaoxin-shi (Lineage of Emperor Ku): This is one of the most ancient Chinese surnames. When Emperor Ku (the Gaoxin-shi) was the leader of the Yan Emperor's tribal alliance, his confederation consisted of eight major tribes, one of which was the Ran tribe.
From the Ji (姬) Surname (Western Zhou): This lineage descends from Ji Zai, the tenth son of King Wen of Zhou.
The State of Ran: Ji Zai was enfeoffed in the territory of Ran (also written as Dan 聃, with its capital located near present-day Rangu Town, Dingtao County, Heze, Shandong).
Surname Adoption: During the Spring and Autumn period, the State of Ran was annexed by the State of Zheng. To commemorate their fallen country, the descendants adopted the state name as their surname. Some records suggest the character was simplified from 聃 (Dan) to 冉 (Ran) by removing the "Ear" (耳) radical.
