Man (满) carries the original meaning of water being so full that it overflows. When a container is filled with water and there is no more room, it spills over; this state of being "brimming" or "full" is what defines Man. Origins

The surname originated from Gui Man, the founding monarch of the State of Chen during the Zhou Dynasty. After his death, he was given the posthumous title of Duke Hu of Chen (Chen Hu Gong), and is therefore also known as Hu Gong Man. His descendants adopted his given name, "Man," as their surname, forming the Man clan. Gui Man himself was a descendant of the legendary Emperor Shun.
