Interpretation of the Shi (史) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "史" (Shi) originally meant an official or scribe. Specifically, the Shi was the official responsible for recording events by the side of ancient kings. In Oracle Bone Script, the character resembles a hand holding a tool or weapon, suggesting a leader involved in hunting or military operations—tasks that required precise coordination and record-keeping.
Origin: 1. Cangjie, the legendary historian under the Yellow Emperor, is famously described as having four eyes and an extraordinary appearance. He is credited with inventing pictographic Chinese characters. His descendants adopted his official title, Shi (Historian), as their surname. 2. Yin Yi (also known as Shi Yi), the Grand Historian (Taishi) of the Zhou Dynasty, is the earliest recorded individual of the Shi clan in historical texts. Many ancient documents regard him as the primary ancestral founder. Serving during the early Western Zhou, he was known for his strict integrity and became a model for all future historians. He is honored as one of the "Four Sages of the Western Zhou" alongside Jiang Taigong, the Duke of Zhou, and the Duke of Shao. He was an astronomer who formulated calendars and used his ancestral office as his surname.
