【Meaning】
Feng (封) means "to enfeoff" or "to grant." The original meaning refers to the Son of Heaven (the Emperor) bestowing titles of nobility and land upon his officials. In Oracle Bone Script, the character Feng (封) depicts a hand on the right and young sprouts growing out of the soil on the left, representing the act of planting. This evolved over time to signify the formal, legal act of granting land and authority (Enfeoffment).
【Origin】
The surname originates from the Jiang (姜) surname. During the Xia and Shang Dynasties, there was a state called Fengfu, established by the descendants of the Flame Emperor (Yan Di). According to the historical record Xing Yuan, a descendant of the Flame Emperor named Ju served as a teacher to the Yellow Emperor. During the Xia Dynasty, Ju's descendants were granted the fief of Fengfu (modern-day Fengfu Pavilion in Fengqiu, Henan), which became a vassal state. These people were known as "Feng Ju" or "Feng Fu." At the end of the Shang and beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, the State of Fengfu was conquered by King Wen of Zhou, and its descendants adopted the state's name as their surname.
