Interpretation of the Jiang (江) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "江" (Jiang) was historically written interchangeably with characters like "Hong" (鴻) and "Qiong" (邛). "Hong" originally referred to a large bird. According to the Shuowen Jiezi, the character "Jiang" specifically refers to the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang).
Origin: Descendants of Bo Yi (of the Ying 嬴 surname), a leader of the Dongyi tribes during the time of Emperor Shun, were enfeoffed during the Shang or early Western Zhou dynasties to establish the State of Jiang (modern-day Zhengyang, Henan). Geographically situated between the powerful states of Chu, Song, and Qi, the State of Jiang was often manipulated by these major powers. Furthermore, frequent flooding from the Huai River prevented the state from becoming strong. In 623 BC, it was finally conquered by the State of Chu. The descendants adopted the name of their fallen state as their surname.
