【釋義】 顧，甲骨文為「雇」。雇是農桑候鳥，是鳩的一種，習慣四周環顧的一種鳥。「頁」即是頭。「顧」是由「雇」和「頁」組成的會意字，本義為回頭看、泛指環視。

【起源】 顧氏源流主要有二，故有「北顧」與「南顧」之分：

Definition of the Character: In Oracle Bone Script, "顧" (Gu) was written as "雇" (Gu). The Gu bird is a migratory bird associated with farming seasons (a type of cuckoo or dove) known for its habit of constantly looking around. The component "頁" (Ye) represents a human head. Together, they form an associative compound meaning "to look back" or "to look around."

Origin: The Gu surname has two primary geographical roots, known as the "Northern Gu" and "Southern Gu":

• 1. Northern Gu (Ji 己 Surname): During the Xia Dynasty, there was a vassal state called the State of Gu (modern-day Fan County, Henan). It was conquered by Tang, the leader of the Shang tribe. The descendants adopted the name of their fallen state as their surname.
