In antiquity, Yi was a migratory bird—the Swallow. In Bronze Script, the character depicts a swallow flying toward a child, symbolizing the divine arrival of a new life or a spiritual connection.

Origin: 1. The Shang Dynasty Legend: Xie, the ancestor of the Shang tribe, was said to be born after his mother swallowed a swallow's egg, leading the family to be granted the surname Zi. Fourteen generations later, Tang the Perfect founded the Shang Dynasty. His name was Lu and his courtesy name was Tianyi. His descendants combined the tribal surname "Zi" with the "Yi" from his name to create the Kong surname. 2. His descendants adopted "Kong" as their surname.
