【释义】姬出自古书上的一种香草“茝”，也为古人祭祀用的一种神草。

【起源】“黄帝之子二十五宗，其得姓者十四人，为十二姓”，第一即为姬姓。黄帝居轩辕之丘，为少典之子，号轩辕氏，出生、建都于有熊，亦称有熊氏。播百谷草木，大力发展生产，始制衣冠，建舟车，发明指南车，定算数，制音律，创医学，且在他统治期间创造文字。黄帝有嫘祖、女节、丽娱、嫫母四位夫人。周初姬发大封诸侯时，姬姓国有53个，当时可以说遍地姓姬。

The character 姬 (Ji) originates from an ancient fragrant herb known as Chai (茝) mentioned in classical texts. This was considered a divine herb used by ancient people during sacrificial ceremonies and rituals to communicate with the heavens.

【Origins】

1. From the Yellow Emperor: It is recorded that "The Yellow Emperor had twenty-five sons who established fourteen lineages, resulting in twelve primary surnames," the first and foremost of which was Ji.

2. Historical Context: The Yellow Emperor (Huangdi) lived at the Hill of Xuanyuan. As the son of Shaodian, he was known as Xuanyuan-shi. He was born and established his capital in Youxiong, thus he is also called Youxiong-shi.

3. Contributions to Civilization: Under his reign, agriculture flourished ("sowing the hundred grains"); he is credited with creating clothing, constructing boats and carts, inventing the South-Pointing Chariot (compass), establishing mathematics, formulating musical scales, founding traditional medicine, and overseeing the invention of Chinese characters.

4. Family & Expansion: The Yellow Emperor had four wives: Leizu, Nvjie, Liyu, and Momu. At the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, when King Wu (Ji Fa) granted fiefs to the nobility, there were 53 states ruled by the Ji clan. At that time, it could be said that the Ji surname was found everywhere under heaven.
