From the Ji (姬) Surname: The Kuang surname originated during the Spring and Autumn period from the descendants of Gou Xu, a retainer of the Lu State official Shi Xiaoquan.
The Magistrate of Kuang: Gou Xu served as the Yi Zai (Magistrate) of Kuang (present-day Changyuan, Henan), making him the highest administrative official of the region. He is historically known as Kuang Gou Xu.
Adoption of the Surname: By the time of Gou Xu’s grandson, the family adopted the name of the ancestor’s jurisdictional territory as their family name, establishing the Kuang clan.
