【Meaning】 The character Leng (冷) is synonymous with Ling (泠/伶). In ancient times, a "Lingren" (伶人) referred to "professionals" who were trained from a young age in literature, musical instruments, dance, and theatrical performances.
【Origin】 The origin traces back to Ling Lun, the music official under the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi). Ling Lun established the musical scales of ancient China and, together with Rong Jiang, cast twelve bronze bells to perform the musical masterpiece Xian Chi, composed by the Yellow Emperor himself. To honor Ling Lun’s contributions, the Emperor granted him the surname Ling (伶).
Subsequently, "Ling" became an official title for those in charge of court music and dance, and later a general term for performers. Since the character creation process was still evolving at that time, the ancient pronunciation of "Ling" was the same as "Leng" (冷). Therefore, the Ling clan is also known as the Leng clan.
