【Meaning】
Mai (麦) refers to a highly valuable grain crop, encompassing varieties such as barley, wheat, and oats. The character’s literal meaning pertains to cereal grains whose seeds possess awns (bristly, needle-like appendages).
【Origins】
From the Meeting at Maiqiu: During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, Duke Huan of Qi traveled to a place called Maiqiu (located northwest of modern Shanghe, Shandong). There, he encountered an elderly man who offered him blessings for a long life.
Granting of the Fief: Impressed by the encounter, Duke Huan granted the elderly man the fief of "Maiqiu." The man's descendants subsequently adopted the name of the fief as their surname. Over time, the character "Qiu" (丘, meaning hill) was dropped, leaving Mai as the simplified family name.
