【Meaning】
The original meaning of Luo (骆) refers to a white horse with a black mane and tail. In ancient Chinese horse-naming conventions, specific coat patterns were highly distinguished, and the "Luo" was considered a striking and noble breed. The character consists of the "Horse" (马) radical and the phonetic component "各" (Ge).
【Origins】
From the Jiang (姜) Surname: This lineage originates from the descendants of Jiang Taigong (the legendary strategist and founder of the State of Qi).
Historical Context: After the death of King Wu of Zhou, the successor King Cheng suppressed the "Rebellion of the Three Guards" and the resistance of the Dongyi tribes. To stabilize the region, Jiang Taigong was enfeoffed in the lands of Qi with the rank of Duke. He established his capital at Yingqiu (modern-day Zibo, Shandong) and was granted the authority to oversee neighboring lords.
Establishment of the Surname: Among the descendants of Jiang Taigong was Gongzi Luo (Prince Luo). To distinguish his specific branch from other lineages of the Qi royal house, his descendants adopted his name, Luo, as their family name.
