【Meaning】
The original meaning of 巩 (Gong) refers to bindings or fastenings made of leather. As stated in the I Ching (Book of Changes) under the Hexagram of Revolution (Ge Gua): "Bind it with the hide of a yellow ox." From this original sense of leather bindings, the character evolved to imply firmness, high quality, sturdiness, and solidarity.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: This lineage takes its name from a fiefdom. During the Zhou Dynasty, a high-ranking official and member of the royal clan named Duke Jian (Gong Jian Gong) was enfeoffed in Gong (present-day Gongyi, Henan Province).
Historical Context: Duke Jian of Gong held great power in the imperial court. Observing that the internal strifes of the Zhou royal house were mostly caused by powerful nobles, he implemented a reform: he promoted talented individuals recruited from various vassal states rather than appointing members of the royal family to office. This policy sparked resentment among the royal descendants. Later, during the rebellion of Prince Chao, Duke Jian was assassinated. His descendants adopted the name of his fief, Gong, as their surname to honor his legacy.
