【Meaning】
The original meaning of Huo (霍) refers to the sound of a flock of birds suddenly taking flight in the rain. In Oracle Bone Script, the character consists of "Rain" (雨) at the top and "Three Birds" (隹) at the bottom. Since "three" symbolizes a large number in ancient Chinese, it represents a massive flock.
The early Huo people likely practiced a bird totem worship. They adopted the image of spring swallows flying joyfully in the spring rain as their clan’s emblem and name, which eventually evolved into the name of their state and their surname. The totem vividly captures a sense of joy and stability as birds thrive within the natural environment.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: This lineage originates from Shu Chu, the sixth son of King Wen of Zhou and the younger brother of King Wu. He was enfeoffed in Huo (south of present-day Huozhou, Shanxi), where he established the State of Huo. He is historically known as Huo Shu.
The Rebellion and Restoration: During the reign of King Cheng of Zhou, Huo Shu joined Guan Shu and Cai Shu in a rebellion alongside Wu Geng (the "Rebellion of the Three Guards"). After the rebellion failed, Huo Shu was demoted to a commoner, but his son was allowed to succeed him as the Lord of Huo to continue the ancestral rites.
The Fall of the State: In 661 BC, the State of Huo was finally annexed by Duke Xian of Jin. Following the fall of their country, the descendants of the Huo rulers adopted the name of their former state as their surname to honor their heritage.
