【Meaning】
The original meaning of Guan (关) refers to a door bolt or a gate bar. It symbolizes the act of closing, securing, or passing through a strategic passage. In ancient contexts, it also represents a "pass" (mountain pass or customs gate), signifying protection and a critical point of entry.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname (The Dragon Raisers): The lineage originates from Dong Fu, a legendary dragon-raising expert during the era of Emperor Shun. Dong Fu was a descendant of Dong Shu'an (a scion of Emperor Zhuanxu). In antiquity, horses were often metaphorically referred to as "dragons."
The Title of Huanlong: During Emperor Shun's reign, Dong Fu was in charge of raising dragons and was granted the title Huanlong-shi (The Clan of Dragon Raisers). In ancient Chinese, the characters "Huan" (豢) and "Guan" (关) were homophonous and interchangeable, leading the name to be written as Guanlong-shi.
Simplification and the Martyr Guan Longpang: Many descendants adopted the ancestral title as their surname, which was later simplified to Guan or Long. A famous descendant, Guan Longpang, was a Grand Official (Dafu) during the reign of the final Xia ruler, Jie. He was enfeoffed in a northern city by the Yellow River, historically known as Guanyi (Guan City).
