【釋義】 《說文解字》：「鄒，指春秋時魯國的驺縣。」「驺」本是一種生活在北方的古獸，因當時數量巨大才有驺縣，後來演化成為養馬及駕車的人。

【起源】 1. 周朝子姓宋國湣公之玄孫正考父，為宋國上卿，歷佐戴、武、宣三公，食邑於鄒（今山東鄒縣），其後代有一支以他的封邑為姓氏，就是鄒氏。 2. 陸終第五子曹安的裔孫曹挾，西周初受封建立邾國，附庸於魯，建都於邾（今山東曲阜），於公元前 614 年由邾文公遷都於繹（今山東鄒縣紀王城），至魯穆公時，改為鄒國。鄒國於戰國中葉為楚國所滅，子孫以國為氏。

Interpretation of the Zou (鄒) Clan Totem

Definition of the Character: According to the Shuowen Jiezi, "鄒" (Zou) refers to the district of Zou in the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period. Originally, "驺" (Zou) was a type of ancient beast that lived in the north. Because of the vast numbers of these creatures in the area at the time, the district was named after them. Later, the term evolved to refer to those who raised horses or drove carriages.

Origin: 1. Zheng Kaofu, the great-great-grandson of Duke Min of the State of Song (of the Zi 庶 surname), served as a high official in Song under three successive dukes. He was granted the fief of Zou (modern-day Zou County, Shandong), and one branch of his descendants adopted the name of this fief as their surname. 2. Cao Xie, a descendant of Cao An (the fifth son of the legendary Lu Zhong), was enfeoffed at the beginning of the Western Zhou to establish the State of Zhu, a dependency of Lu. Originally centered in Zhu (modern-day Qufu, Shandong), the capital was moved to Yi (modern-day Jiwangcheng, Zou County) in 614 BC. During the reign of Duke Mu of Lu, it was renamed the State of Zou. The state was conquered by Chu in the mid-Warring States period, and the inhabitants took the state's name as their surname.
