【Meaning】 The character Lang (郎) is a term used to address men. It originally derived from the character Liang (良), but "Lang" was later adopted as a loanword to represent this meaning. Lang was also a general title for various official positions, specifically referring to the attendants of a monarch. Using "Lang" as an official title is a phonetic loan for the word Lang (廊, meaning "corridor" or "porch"), originally referring to guards or attendants waiting for orders in the palace corridors.
【Origin】 The surname originates from the Ji (姬) clan. It traces back to Fei Bo, the grandson of Duke Yi of Lu and a high official (Dafu) of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period. In 722 BC (the 49th year of King Ping of Zhou), Fei Bo seized the city of Lang (present-day Yutai County, Shandong) to serve as his family's fief. Duke Yin of Lu could not stop him and eventually acknowledged this fact. Some of Fei Bo's descendants adopted the name of this fief, Lang, as their surname, while others adopted his name, Fei, as their surname. This historical connection demonstrates that the "Fei and Lang families are one." Since they share the same clan origin, there is a traditional custom that members of the Lang and Fei clans do not intermarry ("Lang Fei Bu Hun").
