Interpretation of the Shao (邵) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "邵" (Shao) was originally the name of an ancient fief. In antiquity, the characters "邵" and "召" (Zhao) were interchangeable. The character Shao is derived from Zhao, which carries the original meaning of inviting guests to a feast with wine and meat.
Origin: The Shao surname originates from the Ji (姬) royal surname of the Zhou Dynasty.
Duke Kang of Zhao (Ji Shi), a high official during the early Zhou, was enfeoffed at Zhao (modern-day Fengxiang, Shaanxi), thus becoming known as Duke Zhao or Lord Zhao. After King Wu defeated the Shang, the State of Zhao was moved to Zhaoting (west of modern-day Jiyuan, Henan).
Later, Duke Zhao’s eldest son was re-enfeoffed at the State of Yan, while his second son remained in Jiyuan as the Duke of Zhao, and his third son moved south to Nanzhao, Henan.
During the Warring States period, members of the Zhao clan living in Runan and Anyang added the "City/Fief" radical (⻏) to their name to avoid certain social or political entanglements, creating the Shao surname. Historically, figures before the Han Dynasty were mostly recorded as "Zhao," while "Shao" became the standard from the Three Kingdoms period onward.
