【Meaning】
The original meaning of 农 (Nong) is to weed and to harvest. Since harvesting is the final stage of cultivation, the character's meaning extended to encompass farming, agricultural labor, and agriculture as a whole. In Oracle Bone Script, the upper part of the character represents "grass and trees" (crops in a field), while the lower part is the character 辰 (Chen), which depicts a pair of hands holding a sickle. In Bronze Inscriptions, a "field" (田) radical was added among the crops, further emphasizing the act of harvesting in agricultural lands.
【Origins】
From the Jiang (姜) Surname: This lineage originates from the descendants of the Yan Emperor (Shennong-shi). Shennong is also known by the titles Lieshan-shi, Lishan-shi, and Zhuxiang-shi.
Historical Context: Shennong was originally the leader of the Jiang surname tribe in the Jiangwater basin. He is credited with inventing agricultural tools like the wooden plow (Lei), teaching the people how to sow and reap, domesticate animals, create pottery, weave textiles, and use fire. Due to his magnificent achievements and his mastery of fire, he became known as the "Flame Emperor" (Yan Emperor) and the "Divine Farmer" (Shennong).
The Legend of Herbs: Legend tells that he trekked across mountains and rivers to taste "a hundred herbs" to find medicines and antidotes for the people. He eventually died after accidentally consuming the poisonous "Flame Seed" herb, which caused his intestines to rupture. The ancient medical text Shennong Ben Cao Jing (The Divine Farmer's Herbology Classic) is attributed to his legacy.
