【Meaning】
Xin (辛) is the eighth of the ten Heavenly Stems. According to the Theory of the Five Elements, Xin belongs to Metal. It is traditionally associated with the West (direction), Autumn (season), and the Pungent or Spicy (flavor) of the "Five Tastes." Symbolically, it represents the stage in autumn when all things have grown to maturity; however, because the flavor is "Xin," some fruits possess a pungent or sharp taste.
【Origins】
From the Shen (莘) Surname: The lineage originates from the descendants of Qi, the second king of the Xia Dynasty.
The State of Shen: King Qi enfeoffed one of his concubine's sons in Shen (the ancient city was located southeast of present-day Heyang County, Shaanxi), establishing the State of Shen.
The Evolution of the Name: His descendants initially adopted the name of the fief, Shen (莘), as their surname. Over time, because the pronunciation of Shen was nearly identical to Xin, the "grass" radical (艹) was removed, and the surname evolved into Xin (辛).
