Interpretation of the Jia (賈) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "賈" (Jia) refers to trade and those who engage in it. Specifically, it denotes far-sighted merchants who maintain a fixed place of business (waiting for the right market conditions). This is captured in the traditional saying: "Traveling traders are called 'Shang' (商), while stationary merchants are called 'Jia' (賈)."
Origin: The Jia surname consists of descendants of the Yellow Emperor. Both primary branches of the lineage are derived from the names of a state or a fief, both located in the ancient land of Jia (modern-day Xiangfen County, Shanxi).
During the Western Zhou Dynasty, King Kang of Zhou (Ji Zhao) enfeoffed Gongming, the younger son of Ji Shuyu (the founder of the State of Jin), in Jia, establishing the State of Jia. After the state fell, the descendants adopted the state's name as their surname.
During the Spring and Autumn period, Duke Xiang of Jin granted the lands of the former State of Jia to Hu Shegu, also known as Jia Ji. His descendants adopted the name of this fief as their surname, forming another branch of the Jia clan.
