【Meaning】
The character 费 (Fei) originally means "to spend" or "to consume," specifically referring to the expenditure of wealth or resources. In Bronze Inscriptions (Jinwen), the bottom part of the character is 贝 (Shell/Cowrie), which represented money or treasure in ancient China. The top part consists of 弗 (Fu) and a "standing blade" (刂), symbolizing the act of cutting the cords that bind a bundle of arrows, allowing them to scatter—an allegory for the distribution or spending of wealth.
【Origins】
From the Ying (嬴) Surname: This lineage traces back to 若木 (Ruomu), the second son of Da Fei, who was a descendant of the ancient Emperor Zhuanxu (grandson of the Yellow Emperor). History records that Bo Yi, a descendant of Zhuanxu, assisted Great Yu in successfully controlling the floods. As a reward, he was enfeoffed in Fei (present-day Fei County, Shandong). His descendant, Da Fei, established the lineage, and the family adopted his name/fief as their surname.
From the Si (姒) Surname: During the early Western Zhou Dynasty, the Duke of Zhou transferred the enfeoffment of the Si family (his mother Tai Si’s clan) to the State of Fei (located in Feicheng, southwest of modern Fei County, Shandong). During the Spring and Autumn period, the state was annexed by the State of Lu. Its inhabitants and nobility subsequently adopted the state's name as their surname.
