Interpretation of the Tan (譚) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: "譚" (Tan) is originally derived from "覃" (Qin). In Oracle Bone Script and Bronze Script, the character "覃" closely resembles "酉" (the zodiac sign for wine/vessel). Both feature a large lid at the top and a wine jar (tan) at the bottom. Thus, the original meaning of "覃" is a wine jar with a lid.
Origin: Among the vassal states enfeoffed during the Western Zhou Dynasty was the State of Tan. It was a viscountcy held by the Ying (嬴) family, located at Xichengziya in modern-day Zhangqiu, Shandong (some sources suggest Licheng, Shandong). In 684 BC, the state was conquered by Duke Huan of Qi. The ruler of Tan fled to the State of Ju (modern-day Ju County, Shandong), and his descendants adopted the name of their lost state as their surname, forming the Tan clan.
