Interpretation of the Tan (谈) Clan Totem

【Meaning】

Tan (谈) means "to converse," "to speak," or "to discuss." In ancient contexts, the character 谈 (Tan) was often interchangeable with 郯 (Tan), the name of an ancient state.

【Origin】

1. From the State of Song: Weizi Qi, the eldest son of Emperor Yi of the Shang Dynasty, was enfeoffed in the State of Song by King Wu of Zhou. After 36 generations, the lineage reached Lord Tan (Tan Jun). When the State of Song was eventually conquered by the State of Chu, a portion of his descendants adopted Tan (谈) as their surname.

2. From the Zhou Dynasty Official: There was a high official (Dafu) in the Zhou Dynasty named Ji Tan. His descendants also established a branch of the Tan (谈) clan.

3. From the State of Tan (郯): The descendants of Shao Hao were enfeoffed in the State of Tan (modern-day Tancheng, Shandong). During the early Warring States period, the State of Tan was destroyed by the State of Yue. Its people subsequently adopted the state name Tan (郯) as their surname, which was later simplified or transitioned to Tan (谈).
