1. From the Ji (姬) Surname (Lineage of King Wen of Zhou): The Zhan surname originated from the royal Ji family. King Wu of Zhou (son of King Wen) passed the throne down through ten generations to King Xuan of Zhou.

2. The Fief of Zhan: In the 21st year of King Xuan's reign (807 BC), his younger son, Zhi Hong, was enfeoffed in Zhan (the exact location is unknown). He established the State of Zhan with the rank of Marquis and is historically known as Marquis Wen of Zhan (Zhan Wen Hou). His descendants adopted the name of the state as their family name, Zhan.
