【起源】周文王第九子康叔被封于卫（今河南淇县），接管旧殷都朝歌七族的遗民，建立了卫国。卫国初都朝歌，后迁楚丘、帝丘，公元前254年为魏所灭，后在秦国支持下复国，迁野王，至君角时，于公元前209年为秦所灭，子孙以国为氏。

【Meaning】 The character Wei (卫) means "to guard" or "to protect," specifically referring to a person on sentry duty. "Wei" is an ideographic character composed of the components for Wei (韦 - enclosure/guarding), Bi (币 - patrolling), and Xing (行 - rows of soldiers). In Oracle Bone Script, the character consists of two feet surrounding a mouth/enclosure, symbolizing the guarding of a city or tribal settlement.
【Origin】 Kang Shu, the ninth son of King Wen of Zhou, was enfeoffed in Wei (modern-day Qi County, Henan). He took over the remnants of the seven clans of the former Yin capital, Zhaoge, and established the State of Wei. The capital was initially Zhaoge and later moved to Chuqiu and Diqiu. In 254 BC, Wei was conquered by the State of Wei (魏), but was later restored with the support of the Qin State and moved to Yewang. It was eventually abolished by Qin in 209 BC during the reign of Jun Jiao. His descendants adopted the name of the state as their surname.
