Interpretation of the Su Clan Totem
[Definition] The original meaning of "Su" (蘇) is a type of herb, specifically Zi Su (Purple Perilla). Perilla is an annual herbaceous plant characterized by square stems and leaves on both sides. It blooms with red flowers in summer. Its stems, leaves, and seeds are used in traditional medicine, and the seeds can be pressed for oil.
[Origin] Fan (also known as Kunwu), the eldest son of Lu Zhong and great-great-grandson of the ancient Emperor Zhuanxu, belonged to the "Ji" surname group. One of his sons was enfeoffed in the land of Su (also known as You Su, in present-day west of Linzhang County, Hebei) during the middle of the Xia Dynasty. In the early Western Zhou Dynasty, Kunwu’s descendant, Fensheng, was appointed as the Sikou (Minister of Justice) by King Wu of Zhou. Because he was known for his impartial sentencing and ability to educate the populace, he was enfeoffed in the State of Su. Fensheng moved the capital to Wen (southwest of present-day Wen County, Henan), which is why the state was also referred to as Wen. In 650 BC, the State of Su (Wen) was destroyed by the Di tribes, and the descendants adopted the state's name as their surname.
