Interpretation of the Xiao Clan Totem
[Definition] "Xiao" (蕭) is another name for Di (荻 - Amur silvergrass) or Xiao Ai (萧艾 - a type of wormwood). It resembles white mugwort, characterized by white leaves and thick stems that grow in clusters—sometimes dozens of stems together—and emits a distinct fragrance.
[Origin] Due to the immense contributions of Bo Yi, his descendants received various enfeoffments. One descendant named Meng Kui was enfeoffed in the land of Xiao (present-day Xiao County, Anhui Province), establishing the State of Xiao and adopting the state name as his surname. Another branch consists of descendants of Wei Zi Qi of the State of Song during the Zhou Dynasty. According to the Tongzhi Shizu Lue (Annals of Clans): "The Xiao clan originated from the ancient State of Xiao, located in Xiao County, Xuzhou, which was later annexed by the State of Song. Da Xin, a grandson of Wei Zi, was enfeoffed in Xiao as a vassal for his merit in suppressing the rebellion of Nangong Changwan. In the 12th year of Duke Xuan, the state was destroyed by Chu, and the descendants adopted the name as their surname."
