Interpretation of the Jiang Clan Totem
[Definition] "Jiang" (蔣) is a compound pictograph. In Oracle Bone Script, the lower portion resembles two hands holding something upward, while the upper portion represents thatch or grass. Records indicate that "Jiang" refers to Gu grass (Wild Rice), an aquatic plant. Its edible stem is known as Jiaobai (water bamboo). Growing primarily in the south, this is the original meaning of the character "Jiang."
[Origin] During the early Western Zhou Dynasty, Bo Ling—the third son of the Duke of Zhou (Ji Dan)—was enfeoffed in the land of Jiang (southeast of present-day Huaibin County, Henan), where he established the State of Jiang. In the Spring and Autumn period (617 BC), the State of Jiang was conquered by the State of Chu. His descendants adopted the state's name as their surname, forming the Jiang clan.
