【Meaning】
Pu (蒲) refers to Cattail (also known as Xiangpu or Pucao), a perennial aquatic herbaceous plant. Its long, sturdy leaves have been used since ancient times to weave mats, rugs, and baskets. In a symbolic sense, it represents flexibility, utility, and a connection to the waterside.
【Origins】
From a Fief Name: According to legend, during the Xia Dynasty, the descendants of Emperor Shun were enfeoffed in Puban (the area around west Puzhou, Yongji, Shanxi). His descendants adopted the name of the fief, Pu, as their surname.
From the Cattail Plant (The Fu Clan Transition): During the Eastern Jin period, Fu Hong (a powerful general and Governor of Jizhou) had a pond in his residence where cattails grew with extraordinary lushness. Many people found this to be a miraculous or auspicious sign and began referring to his family as the "Pu Family." Consequently, some of his descendants adopted Pu as their surname.
