Jing (荆) refers to a type of deciduous shrub, also commonly known as Chu (楚). Belonging to the Vitex genus of the Lamiaceae family (formerly Verbenaceae), there are many varieties such as Vitex negundo (Chaste tree) and Redbud. In ancient times, these sturdy branches were often used to make canes or whips. Symbolically, Jing represents resilience, the untamed beauty of the wilderness, and the foundational landscape of the ancient Chu civilization.
【Origins】
From the Mi (芈) Surname (The State of Chu): At the beginning of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Xiong Yi, an early ruler of the Chu people, was enfeoffed in the Jing Mountain area (present-day Jingzhou,湖北). The state was initially called Jing, and its people adopted the state name as their family name.
From the Jiang (姜) Surname (Lineage of Qi): At the end of the Warring States period, there was a branch of the Qing clan in the State of Qi, who were descendants of Gongsun Qingke. For specific historical reasons, some members changed their surname to Jing. The most famous figure of this branch is the legendary assassin Jing Ke (also known as Jing Qing).
