【Origins】
From the Mi (芈) Surname (State of Chu): The lineage originates from the royal house of the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period.
The Rebellion of Ruo'ao: In 547 BC (the 26th year of Duke Xiang of Lu), a rebellion broke out involving the Ruo'ao clan of Chu. Bo Fen (also known as Dou Yuejiao), a grandson of the Ruo'ao lineage and a Grand Official of Chu, was executed for his crimes.
Refuge in Jin: Bo Fen's son, Ben Huang, fled to the State of Jin. For his loyalty and service, he was granted the Fief of Miao (the ancient city was located at Miao Pavilion in present-day Jiyuan, Henan).
Military Merit: During a conflict between the states of Jin and Chu, Ben Huang provided crucial military strategies to the Jin army, leading them to a decisive victory.
Adoption of the Surname: The territory of Miao was an ancient state during the Shang and Zhou dynasties that had become a Zhou city-state. Ben Huang’s descendants adopted the name of this ancestral fief, Miao, as their family name.
