Origins
Descendants of King Wen of Zhou: This lineage originated from the Hua (華) surname. In ancient times, the specific character for "flower" (花) did not exist, and "Hua" (華) was used interchangeably. Later, as "花" became the specialized character for flora, some branches of the Hua (華) family changed their surname to Hua (花). Before the Tang Dynasty, the two characters were used synonymously.
Derived from the State of Song: During the Spring and Autumn period, Zheng Kaofu (the son of Duke Dai of Song) was granted the fief of Hua (present-day Shangqiu, Henan). His son, Du (courtesy name Huafu), served as the Grand Chancellor (Taizai) of Song. After a period of political turmoil involving the assassination of Duke Shang of Song and the official Kong Fu Jia, Du established the Hua (華) clan. His descendants eventually adopted the Hua (花) variant.
