【Origins】

1. From the Gaoyao Lineage (Zhou Dynasty): The surname originates from the descendants of Gaoyao (the legendary Minister of Justice). During the Zhou Dynasty, his descendants were enfeoffed in the State of Shu (located west of present-day Lujiang County, Anhui).

2. The State of Shu-Jiu: In 657 BC, the ruler Shu Zi Ping saw his state annexed by the State of Xu. However, the state was later restored and became known as the State of Shu-Jiu.

3. Annexation by Chu: In 552 BC, the state was finally conquered by the State of Chu. Following the fall of their country, the royal descendants adopted the name of their state, Shu, as their family name to preserve their identity.
