【Meaning】
From its character structure, Nie (聂) is composed of the radical for "Ear" (耳) repeated (originally three times in traditional form 聶), signifying "long ears" or "sharp hearing." According to the Shuowen Jiezi, the original meaning of Nie is "to whisper in someone's ear." It symbolizes the intimate transmission of information and the collective spreading of news or wisdom from mouth to ear.
【Origins】
From the Fief of Nie (State of Wei): During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a territory named Nie (located north of present-day Qingfeng County, Henan) within the State of Wei. A high-ranking official (Dafu) of Wei was enfeoffed in this area. His descendants adopted the name of the fief as their family name, establishing the Nie clan.
Lineage of Jiang Ziya: Historical records also link the Nie clan to the descendants of Jiang Shang (Jiang Ziya), the founding strategist of the Zhou Dynasty, making it a branch of the venerable Jiang surname.
