【Meaning】
The original meaning of 纪 (Ji) refers to the "demarcation threads" or "guiding lines" used to distinguish silk strands from one another to prevent tangling. The primitive form of the character Ji is 己 (Jǐ). In Oracle Bone Script and Bronze Script, the character Ji was written simply as Ji (己), resembling a single winding silk thread. It symbolizes order, regulation, and the preservation of lineage (as in "records" or "annals").
【Origins】
From the Jiang (Jiang) Surname: At the beginning of the Western Zhou Dynasty, in honor of the merits of ancient sages and kings, a descendant of the Yan Emperor (Shennong) was enfeoffed in Ji (southeast of present-day Shouguang, Shandong), establishing the State of Ji. During the Spring and Autumn period, the State of Ji was annexed by the State of Qi. The royal descendants of Ji adopted the name of their state as their surname, passing it down through generations.
Ancient Ji Clan: There existed an ancient Ji tribe in high antiquity. Ji Tong, an official under the legendary ruler Fuxi, belonged to this clan. Additionally, before Emperor Shun ascended to the throne, he had a teacher named Ji Hou, who was also a descendant of this ancient Ji lineage.
