【Meaning】
The original meaning of 符 (Fu) is tally or trust. In ancient China, these were known as "Fuxin" (Tally Credentials). They served as official permits for passing through checkpoints and, more importantly, as sacred tokens used by the imperial court to mobilize troops and horses. Typically made of bamboo, wood, or metal (such as the famous "Tiger Tally"), they were split into two halves; only when the two halves matched perfectly could an order be verified.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: The lineage of the Fu surname is relatively singular, originating from the descendants of Hou Ji (the ancestral spirit of the Zhou people and the Ji royal house).
Derived from an Official Title: During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, after the State of Lu was annexed by the State of Chu, Gong Ya, a grandson of the last monarch, Duke Qing of Lu, moved to the State of Qin.
The Office of Fuxiling: In Qin, Gong Ya served as the Fuxiling (the official in charge of the imperial tallies and seals). His descendants adopted his official title as their family name. The Fu surname originated over 2,000 years ago, with its ancestral roots developing in the area of present-day Huaiyang, Henan.
