Interpretation of the Cheng Clan Totem
[Definition] The original meaning of "Cheng" (程) refers to a shaman or priest. In Oracle Bone Script, the character depicts a person kneeling upon a platform or altar in prayer to the heavens.
[Origin] In ancient times, Emperor Zhuanxu appointed "Zhong" as the Nanzheng (Minister of the South) to oversee celestial affairs and "Li" as the Beizheng (Minister of the North) to oversee terrestrial affairs; collectively, the officials in charge of heaven and earth were known as "Zhongli." Zhong and Li were brothers and great-grandsons of Zhuanxu. Their descendants inherited these positions for generations. During the Shang Dynasty, they were enfeoffed in "Cheng" (the Shangcheng cluster in present-day Luoyang), establishing the State of Cheng with the noble rank of Earl, known as "Cheng Bo." During the reign of King Xuan in the late Western Zhou Dynasty, Zhong’s descendant Xiu Fu (known then as Cheng Bo Xiu Fu) entered the royal court to serve as a Sima (Minister of War), ceasing his traditional role as an official of heaven and earth. His descendants subsequently adopted the name of their fief as their surname.
