【Meaning】
According to the Shuowen Jiezi: "Zhu refers to the person who supplicates to the ghosts and gods during sacrifices." In Oracle Bone Script and Bronze Script, the character Zhu depicts a person kneeling before a divine tablet or altar, appearing to be chanting or reciting prayers. It symbolizes the sacred connection between the human realm and the spiritual world.
【Origins】
From Official Titles: In ancient times, there was an official post in charge of sacrificial rituals called "Zhu." These individuals also served as scribes, known as Zhu Shi. This office began in the mid-to-late Shang Dynasty, and the descendants of these officials adopted the title as their family name.
From the State of Zhu (Ji Surname): King Wu of the Western Zhou Dynasty enfeoffed a branch of the Yellow Emperor's descendants in the land of Zhu (present-day Changqing, Shandong), establishing the State of Zhu (also known as the State of Zhu-Ke). After it was annexed by the State of Qi, the descendants used the state name as their surname, Zhu-Ke, which later split into the single-character surnames Zhu and Ke.
From the Fire God Zhurong: Zhongli, a grandson of Emperor Zhuanxu (a descendant of the Yellow Emperor), served as the "Fire Official" (Huo Zheng) for Emperor Ku (Gaoxin-shi). He was known by the title Zhurong. His descendants adopted this title as their surname, which was later simplified to Zhu.
