Interpretation of the Shi (石) Clan Totem
Definition of the Character: The original meaning of "石" (Shi) is "stone" or "rock." It generally refers to cliff rocks, mountain stones, and various types of stone materials. In Oracle Bone Script, the character depicts a precious or significant stone situated beneath a mountain cliff.
Origin: Derived from the Ji (姬) surname. Jing Bo, the 6th-generation descendant of Ji Feng (the founder of the State of Wei during the Western Zhou Dynasty, centered in modern-day Qi County, Henan), had a grandson named Que, also known as Shi Que. He served as a high official (Shangqing) during the reign of Duke Zhuang of Wei and was a renowned virtuous minister. Zhouyu, the son of Duke Zhuang’s favorite concubine, was close friends with Shi Que’s son, Shi Hou. The two plotted and successfully assassinated Duke Huan of Wei. In a famous act of "sacrificing blood relations for the sake of righteousness" (Dayi Mieqin), Shi Que devised a plan to have both Zhouyu and his own son, Shi Hou, executed for their crimes. Shi Hou’s son, Taizhong, then adopted his grandfather’s name (Shi) as the family surname.
