【释义】皮，“兽之皮也”。本义是指野兽的毛皮，也指剥取兽皮、制作皮革的工匠和大批“皮奴”。金文的“皮”像剥取兽皮之形，极为形象。
【起源】源于姬姓，出自春秋时期周卿士樊仲皮，以先祖名字为氏。西周初期，建立樊国的仲山甫的后裔樊仲皮，曾承袭祖职，担任周王室的卿士。由于排行老二，不能成为樊国的继承人，因此他被分封在今山西省河津县一带，后人称为“皮氏邑”。秦朝秦始皇将该行政地域定名为皮氏县。

【Meaning】
Pi (皮) refers to the "skin or hide of a beast." Its original meaning pertains to the fur and pelts of wild animals. It also refers to the craftsmen who skinned animals and manufactured leather, as well as the large numbers of "leather slaves" (Pinu). In Bronze Inscriptions (Jinwen), the character "皮" vividly resembles the act of peeling or stripping a hide from an animal.

Derived from the Ji (姬) Surname: This lineage originated from Fan Zhongpi, a High Official (Qingshi) of the Zhou royal court during the Spring and Autumn period. It is a surname adopted from an ancestor's name.
During the early Western Zhou, Zhongshan Fu established the State of Fan. His descendant, Fan Zhongpi, inherited the ancestral role and served as a High Official for the Zhou court.
Because he was the second-born son, he could not inherit the leadership of the State of Fan. Consequently, he was enfeoffed in the area of present-day Hejin County, Shanxi Province, which later became known as "Pi Shi Yi" (the City of the Pi Clan).
During the Qin Dynasty, Emperor Qin Shi Huang officially designated this administrative region as Pi Shi County.
