Interpretation of the Tian Clan Totem
[Definition] "Tian" (田) is a pictographic character. The structure of the character represents the ancient Qianmo (阡陌) system of field boundaries. It depicts four plots of land with horizontal and vertical paths intersecting in the middle, forming neatly arranged fields. The original meaning of "Tian" also related to traps and nets, referring to the square formations used by ancient ancestors to hunt birds and beasts.
[Origin] In 672 BC, Wan—the son of Duke Li of the State of Chen (of the Gui surname, with its capital in present-day Huaiyang, Henan)—fled to the State of Qi (capital in present-day Linzi, Shandong) to escape internal turmoil. Unwilling to continue using his original national title, and because the characters "Chen" (陳) and "Tian" (田) had similar pronunciations at the time, he adopted "Tian" as his surname and became known as Tian Wan.
