【Meaning】
The original meaning of 甄 (Zhen) is the making of pottery. It specifically refers to the potter’s wheel used in the crafting process. By extension, the character carries connotations of "shaping," "discerning," or "selecting" (as in the modern Chinese word Zhenbie 甄别).
【Origins】
From the Descendants of Gao Yao: This lineage originates from the fief and the name of an ancestor. Zhong Zhen, the son of the legendary tribal leader Gao Yao, served as an official during the Xia Dynasty.
Establishment of the Clan: Zhong Zhen was later enfeoffed in Zhen (present-day Juancheng, Shandong). His descendants adopted both the name of this fief and the name of their ancestor to establish the Zhen surname.
