【起源】源于芈姓，出自春秋时期楚国若敖的后代斗班。 若敖的儿子名叫斗伯比，斗伯比的儿子名叫令尹子文，是春秋时期楚国名相，小时候吃过虎乳，因虎身有斑纹，后代就用“斑”为姓氏。古“班”和“斑”通用，子孙称班氏。

【Meaning】 The original meaning of Ban (班) refers to dividing a piece of jade that was originally a single whole into two parts. Each person holding one half serves as a token of "trust" or "credibility" (xin).
【Origin】 Derived from the Mi (芈) clan, specifically from Dou Ban, a descendant of Ruo Ao of the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period. Ruo Ao's son was named Dou Bobi, and Dou Bobi's son was Lingyin Ziwen, a famous prime minister of the State of Chu. Legend has it that Ziwen was fed tiger's milk as a child; because a tiger's body has stripes (ban), his descendants adopted "Ban (斑)" as their surname. In ancient times, the characters "班" and "斑" were interchangeable, and thus the descendants are known as the Ban clan.
