The character Wang (王) means “the one to whom all under Heaven look” — a title of supreme authority.
In oracle‑bone and bronze inscriptions, 王 depicts a battle axe (钺), a ceremonial weapon used by ancient kings and nobles to command armies, conquer territories, and symbolize absolute power.
Thus, the character embodies sovereignty, leadership, and the mandate to rule.
The Wang surname has multiple ancient origins, primarily from the Ji (姬) and Zi (子) royal lineages.
Crown Prince Ji Jin, son of King Ling of Zhou, was deposed for offering direct remonstrance.
His son Zongjing later served as Situ (Minister of Education) in the Eastern Zhou court.
Because his family was widely known as “the royal household” (王家), his descendants adopted Wang as their surname.
Their ancestral home was Luoyi (modern Luoyang).
Bi Gong Gao, the 15th son of King Wen of Zhou, was an ancestor of a branch of the royal family.
Because they belonged to the king’s clan, his descendants also adopted Wang as their surname.
During the Warring States period, after the State of Wei was conquered by Qin,
Bei Zi, grandson of Prince Wuji of Wei, fled to Mount Tai.
To conceal his identity, he adopted Wang as his surname.
This branch formed even earlier, descending from Bi Gan, the loyal minister and brother of the last Shang king.
His descendants also adopted Wang, honoring their royal heritage.
