Interpretation of the Pan Clan Totem
[Definition] "Pan" (潘) is an evolved form of the character "Fan" (番). "Fan" originally referred to a type of beast. In Oracle Bone and Bronze inscriptions, the character "Fan" is composed of "Cai" (采) and "Tian" (田). "Cai" carries the meaning of treading or stepping, while "Tian" depicts the splayed shape of a beast's paw and represents the footprint left on the ground.
[Origin] During the early Western Zhou Dynasty, Bo Ji—the son of Bi Gong Gao (who was himself a son of King Wen of Zhou)—was enfeoffed in Pan (present-day Gushi, Henan), where he established the State of Pan. During the Spring and Autumn period, the State of Pan was annexed by the State of Chu, and the descendants adopted the state's name as their surname. The Pan and Wei clans share the same ancestral origin.
