【Meaning】
You (游) is an ideogrammatic character. According to the Shuowen Jiezi: "You refers to the pendent streamers attached to the lower edge of ancient banners and flags." The name is derived from the graceful, fluttering, and flamboyant nature of these ornaments as they move in the wind. In a broader sense, it conveys the idea of wandering, traveling, or swimming—moving freely like a banner in the breeze.
【Origins】
From the Ji (姬) Surname: This lineage originates from the State of Zheng. It traces back to Gongzi Yan (Prince Yan), the son of Emperor Mu of Zheng.
Historical Context: During the Spring and Autumn period, Ji You (son of King Li of Zhou) was enfeoffed in the fief of Zheng by his brother, King Xuan of Zhou, leading to the establishment of the famous State of Zheng.
Establishment of the Surname: Among the descendants of the Zheng monarchs was Emperor Mu of Zheng (reigned 627–606 BC). His son, Ji Yan, went by the courtesy name Ziyou (子游). When Ji Yan's grandson, You Gui, came of age, he adopted his grandfather's courtesy name, You, as his family name. This established the You clan as a prominent branch of the Zheng royal house.
