From the State of Zheng (Spring and Autumn Period): Shu Duan, the son of Duke Wu of Zheng and younger brother of Duke Zhuang of Zheng, fled to the State of Gong (present-day Hui County, Henan) after a failed coup. He is also known as Gong Shu Duan. His descendants first used "Gong" as their surname and later added the "Water" radical to become the Hong clan. The bloodline ancestor of this branch is Ji Shu Duan.
