Origin: The lineage originates from the Ji (姬) royal house of the Western Zhou Dynasty. After the founding of the Western Zhou, King Wu (Ji Fa) distributed fiefs to his relatives and meritorious officials to consolidate his rule. Ji Zheng, the eighth son of King Wen and younger brother of King Wu, was a high-ranking Duke and one of the "Six Ministers" (Liu Qing) of the Zhou court. He was enfeoffed in the territory of Mao (modern-day Yiyang, Henan), where he established the State of Mao. His descendants adopted the name of the state as their surname.
