Interpretation of the Zeng Clan Totem
[Definition] In ancient times, the characters "Zeng" (鄫), "Zeng" (繒), and "Zeng" (曾) were used interchangeably to refer to a cooking vessel used for steaming food. In Oracle Bone Script, the "Tian" (田) shaped lower portion of the character represents the steamer (Zeng), while the two strokes escaping from the top represent rising steam.
[Origin] Qu Lie, the son of the sixth Xia Dynasty King Shao Kang (of the Si surname), was enfeoffed in "Zeng" (present-day Fangcheng, Henan), where he established the State of Zeng. During the Spring and Autumn period, the state was destroyed. Filled with the grief of losing his nation, Crown Prince Wu fled to the State of Lu, where he became an official. To express that he had left his homeland but would never forget his ancestors, he removed the "Yi" (邑) radical (represented by 阝, meaning "city" or "state") from the character "Zeng" (鄫) and adopted "Zeng" (曾) as his surname.
